I am from her hometown of Rushville, Indiana, and have been collecting her movies and photos over the past 20 or so years. On May 8th our local historical society is doing a program on her and will be showing "My Best Girl." I am doing a power-point presentation on her just before the movie is shown. If you have any more on her, I would appreciate it. I would love to find copies of some of her artwork. A few years ago I was in contact of a niece of hers that was an actress and living in Europe. I need to reconnect with her if I can locate her email address. Larry L. Stout, Rushville, IndianaLarry L. They usually say that Helen adopted Dorothy, although the stories of how that happened differ.
I am Helen's great-granddaughter, Dorothy (Doro) was my grandmother. She was born in December 1915. Doro met my grandfather in high school in Sonora, CA, where Helen Holmes and Lloyd Saunders lived for several years; Helen knew the area well from having filmed movies there. (Sonora was a gold rush town and many westerns have been filmed there, even up to the present time.)
Helen and Lloyd returned to Hollywood in about 1932. She hoped to revive her career but only appeared in a few bit parts. She instead trained animals, mostly dogs, for movies as well as running the antique store.
A short movie was made in Australia about Helen and JP McGowan, called "Stunt Love," that features many of Helen's breathtaking stunts. It has only been shown twice in the US that i know of: at the MOMA in New York in spring 2011, and at the Tiburon International Film Festival in Tiburon, CA (near San Francisco) in 2012. There is a website for the movie so you can find out if it is available yet as a DVD or perhaps for streaming.
I wrote a short biography of Helen for a screening of one of her movies at the Niles Essanay Silent FIlm Museum and would be glad to share it with you if you are interested. She died two years before i was born so i never knew her, only through family stories and the fairly extensive research i have been doing, including with JP McGowan's biographer.
Shirley Freitas
Shirley Freitasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2920638799457751115.post-7411650967319557732012-06-07T10:38:05.358-07:002012-06-07T10:38:05.358-07:00Thank you both!
